Liquid Edition Volume
One, a tutorial developed and produced by Cutting Edge Training, is a
slick, 90 minute infomercial for Pinnacle Liquid Edition.
There is a remote possibility experienced users may pick up a few tips
on using the product but new users will find themselves scratching
their heads wondering if they will ever learn how to use this
software.
This review is not challenging what Anthony
says but more how he says it. Since this is the fifth
Liquid Edition tutorial I have reviewed, I could not escape the
feeling the its producers were more concerned with speed to market
rather than quality of content.
With that said... my
biggest complaint lies with Anthony's failure to lay an adequate
foundation for each topic. Reminiscent of a Pinnacle Road show
presentation, rarely during his 90 minute exercise does he explain
why he is doing or saying anything. He uses technical jargon
without explaining it's meaning. As an example, during a segment
on Video Logging, Anthony used terms like
REEL
and EDL.
Most new users will have no idea what he is talking about.
-
What is a reel?
-
What is an EDL?
-
When do I use one?
He later went on to reference dropping clips into a
RACK.
Again, these
terms are completely foreign to most new users.
This video is a classic
example of a "subject matter expert" attempting to pass on information
while not taking into consideration the varied skill levels of his intended audience.
I admire
Anthony's product knowledge and his ability to deliver a fluid and
energetic performance but it was clear to me, little preparation went
into generating a working script. Had a script been prepared,
viewers would not have been inundated with the extraneous use of the
word "actually", a phrase Anthony unknowingly embeds into his
presentations.
The liner notes on the
back of the DVD case promises that Volumes 2 and 3 will focus on some
of Liquid Edition's advanced features. My only concern is, if
they approach advanced tutorials with the detail and methodology
evidenced in Volume One, it will fail to meet the educational
needs of its viewers.
